Burton History
 Burton Snowboards, founded by Jake Burton Carpenter in 1977, is a snowboard manufacturer that has grown to become one one of the most popular snowboard companies in the world. With a product line that encompasses all the essential elements of snowboarding (snowboards, boots, snowboard bindings, outerwear, accessories), Jake Burton has created a definition of what it is to be a snowboarder. Besides selling goods under its own brand name, Burton also owns several sub-brands which tend to focus on a specific line of products or aspect of the snowboard market. These sub-brands include Anon Optics (retailing snowboard goggles and other eyewear), Red Protection (snowboarding helmets and body armor), and Gravis Shoes.
Burton is often referred to as the " high end " of snowboards and snowboard gear. Never the less, it must be noted that Burton snowboards is still rider-owned and independent. Due to its significant influence over the snowboard market and renown with snowboarders world wide, Burton has been courted for takeover by many large corporations many times over, yet Mr. Burton has resisted. Burton's professional snowboard team is also one of the largest and most well rounded in snowboarding. Their team includes some of the most influential and successful riders in snowboarding such as Shaun White, Jeremy Jones, and Terje Haakonsen.
