Billbong History

North Face JacketFounded in 1973 by surfer and shaper Gordon Merchant and his partner in Australia, Billabong started out small; the founders hand made board shorts and sold them to local surf shops. Early on, the company began sponsoring events and introducing the best surfers to the brand to help spread the word. Expanding from the Australian market starting in the 80s, Billabong moved to the North American and European markets, where it was tremendously successful. As surfing grew more popular in the 1990s, Billabong expanded out into the skate and snow markets, following its core customers. As Billabong continued to gain success, the company acquired Von Zipper, Element Skateboards, and Nixon Watches. Throughout this expansion, Billabong has remained true to its core beliefs and beach lifestyle.
